Deadly truck crash causes chaos on NYS Thruway in Tuxedo
Two truck drivers died in a fiery crash on the NYS Thruway in Tuxedo Tuesday, leaving a traffic nightmare for commuters.
Police say a tractor-trailer was pulled over on the northbound side of the Thruway at the Arden Station Road overpass around 2:30 a.m. Police say 58-year-old Gary Akehurst was apparently fixing something on his trailer. According to police, another tractor-trailer lost control, went across two lanes and side-swiped the parked truck, killing Akehurst. Police say the moving truck then spun out of control and burst into flames, killing that driver, 27-year-old John Johnson. Both trucks, from New England Motor Freight, were traveling from the same terminal in Maryland and headed to the same place.
The northbound side of the Thruway was shut down for about eight hours, leaving thousands of commuters with no where to go. All lanes have since reopened. Hazmat crews were on the scene to clean up because one of the trucks contained liquid insulation, which is considered dangerous.
