DEA agents rocked by small explosion during drug bust
Drug enforcement agents were hit by small explosion Wednesday in Yonkers while searching the car of a couple found with a stash of cocaine.
Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) personnel arrested the couple in a parking lot around 3:30 p.m. at the High Ridge Shopping Plaza.
Three agents heard a loud popping sound coming from the SUV. They were surprised by the small explosion. Law enforcement officers descended on the shopping center to investigate. Westchester County?s bomb robot went in to take another look at what caused the explosion.
The bomb unit determined it was the airbag inside the vehicle that exploded.
?The airbag was tampered with for the purpose, we believe, to conceal a compartment. We do not know at this time what the intent was, why the airbag was put in that position, whether it was intentionally set to go off?? Maj. Michael Kopy of the New York State Police said.
No other explosives were found. The three agents sustained minor injuries.
Police said the car will be returned to DEA headquarters where it will be completely examined.
