A state park in Rockland is getting some unwanted attention over concerns about overcrowding and public safety.

"There comes a moment when we say enough and that moment has been reached,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day about visitors at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage.

News 12 saw a steady flow of people coming in and out of the park, but nowhere near the amount of people coming in on weekends or holidays that Day says is causing 'mayhem' off the grounds and is a public safety hazard.

Day says the increasingly large crowds are too much for park police to handle and that local, county and state officials now need to be involved.

Representatives for Rockland Lake State Park say it can accommodate 10,000 people, but that there are only half as many parking spots.

They say they're aware of the concerns and are happy to address them to accommodate public safety.

A meeting between park officials, law enforcement and state representatives is set for July 25.
