David Spano announces bid for county executive
Westchester County Executive Andy Spano's son, David, announced this weekend that he will run against his father for the position.
According to records, this is the first time in county history that a father and son will challenge each other in the primary. Andy Spano, a Democrat, is seeking re-election.
David Spano unveiled his intentions to run at an anti-government rally alongside protest organizer Sam Zherka, who is a newspaper publisher and strip club owner. Critics claim Zherka exploited familial tensions between Andy and David Spano in order to get his own political message represented.
"It is very sad that Dave Spano is being manipulated and exploited by strip club owner Sam Zherka,'' Deputy County Executive Susan Tolchin says.
David Spano insists he is running for the position in order to abolish county government.
"We have an extra government we don't really need," David Spano says. "So by running as county executive, I intend to be the last."
David Spano appeared in anti-government commercials last month, which were financed by Zherka.
