A group of about 20 Darien High School students traveled to New York City Friday to attend a rally on gun reform.
The students left campus, walked to the nearby train station and made their way to Washington Square Park, where they joined thousands of other students. They wielded signs that said things like, "Am I next?"
The group said they're protesting gun violence, lax gun laws and the influence of special interest groups on United States politics.
Friday's walkout not only marked the grim anniversary at Columbine High School, but it was also an effort to keep national attention on stopping school violence. It followed a nationwide walkout in March on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting, as well as the March for Our Lives events.
Darien students said they can't just sit by and do nothing while those in Washington aren't taking action. Their walkout was not sanctioned by the school and could result in some form of punishment. But students said it was worth it for their cause.
