Dangerously cold temperatures are heading to the Hudson Valley, and pose a threat to the pipes inside your home.

Tommy Webber, who owns T. Webber Plumbing, says last week was busy and he's expecting more of the same this week. He says he got calls for frozen pipes in Pound Ridge, Ardsley and Portchester.

"The phone was ringing off the hook and pipes were freezing and pipes were breaking," says Webber.

Webber says once the pipes break they can burst and cause water damage. He says the cost to fix a burst pipe can be really expensive.

Webber says homeowners can put antifreeze in their boilers so the pipes don't freeze. He also says to keep cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom open to help circulate warmer air around the plumbing. Also be sure to keep the heat on - especially at night.

If power goes out, Webber says those who have a generator should turn it on as soon as possible and keep it on. He says it's also a good idea to let faucets drip to help prevent pipes from freezing over.

Webber says if a homeowner's pipes do freeze the best thing to do is call a plumber who can bring in the tools needed to prevent them from bursting.
