Daily fines loom for Entergy over Indian Point sirens
Entergy, owner of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, finds itself in violation with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) after missing yet another emergency siren system deadline.
The NRC issued what is called a notice of violation to the company, saying it has repeatedly failed to meet certain deadlines for the new alert and notification system. After missing two deadlines and being fined $130,000, Entergy was confident the siren system met requirements needed for the August 24 deadline.
Entergy is awaiting approval from FEMA in order to put the new system on line. Two issues that remain are the volume of the 155 sirens, after it was found they cannot be heard indoors in some spots, and a backup power supply in the event of an outage. The old system currently in place does not have backup power. An Entergy spokeswoman released a statement to News 12 saying, "Entergy is confident it has completed the appropriate testing analyses to prove the system is ready to be declared operable. Entergy will continue to work closely with FEMA."
The NRC is considering fining Entergy for every day the new system is not on line.
