New Yorkers are now required to cover their nose and mouth when outside and not able to socially distance from others.

The order from Gov. Andrew Cuomo went into effect at 8 p.m. Friand applies to everyone 2 years and older.

The plan is generating criticism, but Gov. Cuomo said the masks are working to help curb the spread of the virus.

The order extends to public and private transportation systems like Uber and Lyft.

Officials say face coverings don't mean an N95 mask or a face shield. It can be a bandana, a repurposed piece of clothing or something to cover your nose and mouth.

“We want to see fewer people die and I am asking New Yorkers to wear a mask not just to protect yourself but to protect other people from you,” says Gov. Cuomo.
