Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Friday prohibiting state authorities from asking anyone they have contact with about their immigration status.
It also means state agencies won't be able to share a person's immigration status with federal authorities, except in certain situations, such as a law enforcement investigation.
Immigrant rights activist Sadie Palmer, who came from Peru to Port Chester, hopes some fears among immigrants will dissolve under the governor's executive order.
"It's very important. We're immigrants…students, professionals – working so hard and fighting to live in this country," she said.
The order comes during a time when the federal government is cracking down on illegal immigration.
The Conservative Party of New York issued a statement saying the governor is giving immigrants who entered the country illegally the greenlight to disregard the rule of law.
