Critics push to oust E. Ramapo superintendent
The failure of the state Legislature to place a state monitor over the racially divided East Ramapo school district has critics regrouping and pushing to oust the district's superintendent.
The school board, which is dominated by the Hasidic-Orthodox Jewish community, is under fire for allegedly improperly helping their private religious schools at the expense of the public schools.
State Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch has called on East Ramapo School Superintendent Joel Klein to step down. Parents and activists picketed Klein's New City home over the weekend, demanding his ouster.
State Sen. David Carlucci, however, says the state already has the power to mandate changes.
"I believe that if they feel that the superintendent should resign, they should make the superintendent resign," he says. "They have that ability to do that."
School district officials claim the real solution is not changing the leadership, but in fixing a broken formula for determining state aid.
News 12 has reached out to Klein and district officials for a comment on the calls for his resignation. They have not yet issued a statement on the situation.
