Crews on scene of Peekskill tanker truck accident
Roads are closed and environmental cleanup crews are on the scene after a tractor-trailer accident in Peekskill Monday.
Witnesses say around 8 a.m., the tractor-trailer entered Annsville Circle at a high speed. As the truck rounded the curve, it overturned. The truck was carrying 5,000 gallons of sodium hydroxide, also known as lye.
Hazmat crews used cameras to inspect the tanker for leaks before proceeding to avoid chemical burns. A contractor was also called in to drain the tank. State police, firefighters, the Westchester Department of Emergency Services and even the Coast Guard were at the scene.
Due to the potential danger, roads in the area are closed. Traffic is being diverted at the Annsville Creek Bridge, which carries Routes 9, 6 and 202. The approach to the Bear Mountain Bridge is also closed. Authorities expect to reopen the area sometime Monday night. The traffic detour has caused several local businesses to lose money.
The unidentified driver from Albany suffered bumps, bruises and a broken collar bone. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center.
