Crews contained a brush fire in Putnam County Monday afternoon.
The brush fire near the Dutchess-Putnam border had  been burning since Friday evening and continued to smolder on top of a steep ridge at Sugarloaf Mountain inside of Hudson Highlands State Park.
Park rangers tell News 12 the rugged terrain where the fire burned made it impossible for them to fight as they traditionally would from the ground.
Helicopters dropped water from above as crews built trenches and removed leaf litter from below to keep the fire contained.
Park rangers say they have an 80-acre containment line around the fire. They say families are not in any danger, but should expect to continue seeing smoke throughout the mountaintops. They say the only thing that will put the blaze out for good is some rainfall.
