Crews are cleaning up Wednesday after a major water main break in New Rochelle.
A 16-inch water main burst around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street and Webster Avenue. The pipe is one of the biggest in the system and it carries a lot of water. Several utility lines run in the same area, making the repair more difficult, workers said.
The northbound lanes of Main Street between Beechwood and Webster avenues had to be shut down during repairs and traffic ran slowly on the south side. Despite the size of the pipe, only two customers lost water.
The project supervisor says the water should be back on for those customers by Wednesday afternoon. He adds the cleanup will take longer, so one lane will probably be closed for most of the day.
