A coyote sighting in Yonkers prompted a school principal to cut short outdoor recess.

A man living near Public School 9 on Fairview Avenue saw a coyote in the area and notified the principal as a precaution. A district spokesperson says the principal brought the kids inside right away and called police.

A resident who was also walking on Fairview Avenue says she didn't see a coyote. Others who have lived in the area for years say they've never seen a coyote there either.

However, there have been recent sightings of coyotes in urban areas such as New Rochelle and Queens.

According to the Humane Society, coyote attacks on humans are rare. It says people are more likely to be hit and killed by a stray golf ball than be bitten by a coyote.
