Court documents shed light in illegal immigrant's death
More details are coming out about the death of an illegal immigrant in Bedford.
Court documents that were reportedly filed Thursday reveal prosecutors believe Mount Vernon Police Officer George Bubaris dumped Rene Perez's body on a Bedford road and inflicted a fatal blow to his abdomen.
In September, Officer Bubaris was indicted on charges of second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors will have to prove that he caused Perez's death and ignored that the illegal immigrant was at serious risk. Edward Hayes, Bubaris? attorney, says there is nothing to support the claim that Bubaris caused Perez?s injuries.
Perez had made a 911 call on April 28 from a Mount Kisco Laundromat, which Officer Bubaris responded to. Perez, who was homeless and known to have a drinking problem, was found on Byram Lake Road and later died. Attorneys for Officer Bubaris insist there is no evidence to prove their client caused Perez's death.
However, the county coroner?s office ruled the death as a homicide after autopsy results showed bruises to the abdomen and extensive internal bleeding.
A lawyer for the Perez family also reportedly filed a wrongful death suit against Officer Bubaris, Mount Kisco and Bedford on Thursday.
Officer Bubaris has been suspended without pay and is free on $100,000 bail.
