With the price of regular gas at more than $3 a gallon across the county, officials are on the lookout for anyone who is gas gouging.
The Westchester Department of Consumer Protection usually does a monthly survey of gas prices with all the stations. However, due to the recent jump in prices, the department will conduct surveys every week. Gas prices have gone up about 40 cents a gallon in the last 30 days, but the people at consumer protection say that's not price gouging. They say if it?s being done at all stations, it's a function of the marketplace. The office says at the time of Hurricane Katrina last year, county surveys showed 11 gas stations raised their prices 60 cents a gallon in 24 hours. That, they say, is an example of price gouging. Those stations were referred to the NY Attorney General?s office for potential prosecution.
