County legislature passes '09 budget with tax hike

(AP) - Westchester County residents may haveto dig just a little deeper to pay next year's taxes. Legislators on Monday approved a 2009 budget that raises the taxrate by 1.7 percent despite cuts in spending.

(AP) - Westchester County residents may haveto dig just a little deeper to pay next year's taxes.
Legislators on Monday approved a 2009 budget that raises the taxrate by 1.7 percent despite cuts in spending.
The $1.77 billion spending plan passed by a 13-4 vote, with onlythe Republican members opposing it. It now goes to County ExecutiveAndrew Spano to sign or veto. Legislators also approved the $93million capital budget plan, which was 19 percent less than thisyear's.
Absent from the budget were raises for nonunion management. Thecontroversial proposal was removed after 20 speakers at a publichearing spoke out against the plan earlier on Monday.
The budget includes no layoffs among the county's work force.
