County leaders push to get Indian Point shut down
Leaders in Westchester and Rockland are putting political pressure on the federal government to get Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant shut down.
Westchester County Executive Andy Spano and Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef were joined by Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) Friday in White Plains to voice their concerns about Indian Point. They say Hurricane Katrina illustrates problems inherent with any emergency evacuation plan. They are urging FEMA to not recertify the plant?s plan. If the evacuation plan is not recertified, it may force closure of Indian Point.
Entergy official Jim Steets says it would be more helpful if critics were more specific about the evacuation concerns instead of reciting an anti-nuclear party line.
