With skyrocketing gas prices hitting drivers hard in the wallet, a Westchester lawmaker says he has a way for residents to save money.
Legislator George Oros (R-Cortlandt) is proposing a suspension of the county?s portion of the sales tax on gasoline. Oros says it would offer some quick relief to drivers, who are now paying more than $3 dollars a gallon. By his calculations it would mean a 9 cents a gallon cut in the price at the pump.
According to Oros, the Westchester County Board's Republicans are backing his plan. Eliminating the county sales tax on gasoline would have to be approved by Westchester County Executive Andy Spano and the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Neither Spano's office nor county board Democrats had an immediate reaction to the proposal.
