The Westchester County Board voted 12-5 Tuesday night to approve a controversial settlement aimed at creating affordable housing for minorities in upscale towns.
The out-of-court deal with the federal government calls for 750 units to be developed in predominantly white communities across the county to the tune of more than $60 million.
The settlement is the result of a lawsuit claiming Westchester County defrauded the Department of Housing and Urban Development by claiming it had taken race into consideration for affordable housing.
The administration of Westchester County Executive Andy Spano admitted there had been a technical violation, but denied it was intentional.
