Councilman calls for safer railings at Palisades Center Mall
Several deaths at the Palisades Center Mall in recent years could have been avoided, according to one local councilman.
The latest mall death occurred last Thursday when a New Jersey woman jumped from a fourth-floor balcony.
Clarkstown Councilman George Hoehmann says he wants to see higher barriers installed at the mall, a costly but potentially lifesaving measure.
"What's the value of a human life," he said. "And I would say it's not cost-prohibitive."
Hoehmann says he has tried to talk to shopping center officials about the new safety measures, but they have refused to consider his proposal.
News 12 reached out to mall officials several times, but they did not comment on the proposal.
