Texting while driving is already illegal, but could texting while biking be next? 

City Councilman Mark Treyger plans to introduce legislation this week that would ban bicyclists from using their cellphones while pedaling. 

Treyger told the New York Post that the idea came after he saw a distracted cyclist nearly cause a multi-car accident near his office in Brooklyn.

If the proposal passes, first time offenders who do not cause any injuries or property damage will be required to complete a bike safety course. However, if they do cause injury or damage, they will be hit with a $50 fine. 

Treyger also plans to issue a companion bill to establish an official bicycle safety course in New York City.
