The New Windsor cosmetics factory where an explosion occurred Monday had several safety violations issued against it this year, News 12 has learned.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration hit the Verla International factory with nine violations earlier this year. OSHA says the citations came as recently as April, and all were classified as serious.
The violations range from inadequate maintenance at exits to the use and storage of flammable liquids.
In certain cases, employees were cited for not using appropriate eye and face protection when exposed to dangerous chemicals.
According to OSHA's website, the violations were settled in June.
Verla International also had to pay thousands of dollars in fines.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday the launch of a statewide investigation into worker safety at the factory.
"Following today's chemical explosion, I am directing a multi-agency investigation to get to the bottom of what happened and review compliance with state labor and environmental laws," he said.
Cuomo has also deployed state emergency response teams to the site.
News 12 reached out Verla International for a response, but its phone number was not working. Calls to OSHA were also not returned.
