Cortlandt kennel under renovation goes up in smoke
Investigators were on the scene of a fire at a Cortlandt dog kennel Friday, which firefighters say looks to be suspicious.
No animals were inside the kennels when the fire broke out around 4 a.m. For the past year, construction crews have been refurbishing the building to make it a working dog kennel again.
When firefighters arrived at the Old Crompound Road building, it was engulfed in flames. Lake Mohegan fire officials say they had problems with their water source since at least one hydrant wasn't working. They had to call in a tanker from Continental Village to help out.
The Westchester K-9 unit was also brought in to help and picked up on something investigators call suspicious. Investigators say it is too early to determine a cause of the fire, but say fireworks could be a possibility. Workers say in the past few weeks they've had problems with kids trespassing at the site. State police have now taken over the investigation.
