Police in Cornwall are searching for the person responsible for fatally shooting a dog.
Cornwall authorities say the female bulldog mix was shot at point blank range in the right side of the head on Monday.
The say she was found a short time later by a Highway Department employee who spotted the dog in the grass while making his morning rounds on Long Hill Road Extension around 8:30 a.m..
The employee initially thought it was a farm animal, but then saw the bullet casing next to the dog’s body.
Police asked that News 12 show photos of the dog in the hope of someone recognizing the dog and leading them to its owner.
"I've never seen this in the 30 some odd years I've been in law enforcement. Some people aren't cut out to own pets or have children, and this is clearly the case here," said Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard.
Anyone with information about the dog is asked to call Cornwall Town Police at 845-534-8100.
