Police are hunting two masked men who robbed a Cortlandt gas station clerk at gunpoint Sunday and then shot him.
Police say the two men, wearing ski masks and gloves, walked into the Shell station on East Main Street and demanded money from overnight attendant Muhanad Awadallah, 19. Awadallah handed over $400, but the duo shot him in the leg.
"There was no resistance," says State Police Investigator John Shaughnessy. "No verbal communication between the two individuals and the victim. Usually someone gets the money and leaves the scene and they wouldn't bother intentionally hurting someone for no apparent reason."A customer who pulled in called 911 after seeing the clerk bleeding on the floor screaming in pain. The attendant is in stable condition after undergoing surgery at Westchester Medical Center.
The crime has left residents on edge. "You don't expect it here," says Dean Basulto. "You expect it more in the city, but things like this are hopefully isolated."
Police are now investigating whether the robbery is connected to a similar incident at a Croton gas station. Anyone with information about either crime is asked to call authorities at 914-788-8044.
