Cop crashes cruiser on call for wanted man in Ossining
A Yorktown police officer was rushed to the hospital Friday after crashing his cruiser while responding to a call for backup from Ossining police.
According to police, Officer Jason Swart, a member of the Yorktown Police Department's K-9 detail, was traveling westbound on Route 133 to help Ossining police find a suspect. Swart was behind a vehicle that started to make a left turn and the officer swerved to avoid hitting the car, running off the road, police say. Swart was taken the hospital and is expected to be alright. His police dog was injured in the crash.
Meanwhile, Ossining police are still searching for Richard Newton who is wanted for a parole violation. Investigators say Newton was seen in a CVS drug store with his 5-year-old son and took off after being approached by police, leaving his child behind. Police say Newton is not believed to be particularly dangerous, however, they want to take him into custody as soon as possible.
