Congressional candidate Mondaire Jones and a group of politicians are suing President Donald Trump over recent changes made to the United States Postal Service.
Trump recently installed a new postmaster general, who has made changes some believe are meant to disrupt the agency and suppress mail-in ballots during the presidential election in November.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy says he's holding off on major changes to the post office that were put into effect just months before the election.
He says he wants to ensure voters are fully supported by the Postal Service, and that hours at post offices will not change, mail processing equipment and blue collection boxes will remain where they are and no mail processing facilities will be closed.
Jones says that both Trump and DeJoy are trying to dismantle the Postal Service to thwart the election.
Sheila Kaye, of Yonkers, who makes weekly trips to the post office, says that USPS should be protected as it serves the nation - politics aside.
DeJoy said in a statement, "The Postal Service is ready today to handle whatever volume of election mail it receives this fall. Even with the challenges of keeping our employees and customers safe and healthy as they operate amid a pandemic, we will deliver the nation’s election mail on time and within our well-established service standards."
