State lawmakers from Rockland County are hoping a compromise on state oversight of the East Ramapo Central School District will pass before the legislative session ends.

Critics have long complained the school board, which is dominated by members of the Orthodox Jewish community, have mismanaged the district and taken actions favoring students in their own private schools. A compromise bill in Albany is seen by supporters as a way to begin fixing the district's problems.

The deal calls for the state to kick in $3 million for programs that had been cut, while state-appointed monitors would remain in the district. Also, the state Education Department will review the school district budget.

Board President Yehuda Weismandl says of the deal, "This infusion of resources will help address funding inequalities that have plagued the district for years."

State legislators say they feel the deal is fair to all.

The proposal still has to be approved by both houses of the Legislature and be signed by the governor. Supporters say it's a major step forward to improving the conditions in the district.

A vote on the proposal cannot take place until Thursday, the last day of the current legislative session.
