Community mourns woman killed by lion in South Africa
Family and friends gathered Saturday at the Graham Funeral Home for a service for the young woman from Rye who was mauled to death this week by a lion in South Africa.
Katherine Chappell, a 29-year-old Emmy award-winning video editor, was in South Africa trying to raise awareness about poaching wild animals.
But while on a safari last weekend in Johannesburg, Chappell was reportedly trying to take pictures of lions through an open window when a lioness pounced on her and mauled her to death.
Chappell graduated from the School of the Holy Child and Hofstra University. She had been living in Vancouver and working on the show "Game of Thrones."
The family has set up a memorial fund to pay the costs of bringing Chappell's body back from South Africa to New York.
