Community members gathered in White Plains Thursday to remember the 6 million people killed during the Holocaust.
The event was part of the nation's annual 'day of remembrance.'
Holocaust survivor Helga Luden was forced to become an adult at age 6. Luden says her mother instructed her to hide in the woods alone while Nazi soldiers closed in on her family.
Luden remembers being told to eat whatever she could find in the woods, but says she got very sick. Luden was eventually rescued and later in life started over in New Rochelle.
"I was very sick," says Luden. "I had terrible pox. I must have eaten poisonous mushrooms or daisies."
Fourth-graders also sang to the crowd to provide hope to those in attendance.
