Community marks year since Rene Perez's death
Family and friends of Rene Perez gathered Monday night and prayed for the Guatemalan immigrant who died on the side of a Bedford road one year after his death.
A memorial Mass was celebrated in Spanish at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mt. Kisco. Attendants say they prayed for answers and resolutions to Perez?s death.
Perez, 42, was found badly beaten on the side of Byram Lake Road one year ago. He died from his injuries hours later. After four months of investigation, Mt. Kisco police officer George Bubaris was charged with beating and dumping Perez.
Bubaris was one of the three officers to see Perez alive after he called 911 from a Laundromat the night he died.
Perez?s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Bubaris, Mount Kisco and Bedford. Bubaris? trial begins May 19.
