The state of emergency is no longer in effect after Friday’s nor’easter, but officials in Yorktown say there is still a lot of work to be done.
Three neighborhoods in Yorktown were cut off from the rest of the world by massive toppled trees and a mess of tangled power lines as a result of the storm.
Homeowners wouldn't speak with News 12 on camera, but said they had to carry food and gas for generators on a makeshift path through the woods. Once they got out of the trees, they had to go up and down hills, several hundred yards to each home.
Yorktown Town Supervisor lan Gilbert says he's been told by the utility companies that power won't be restored to residents in the dark before Tuesday night. He says he's surprised Con Edison and NYSEG weren't better prepared.
“I believe we knew this storm was going to be a devastating storm. They maintain they were caught by surprise,” he says.
