Rapper Kanye West wants to reportedly rename the city of Rye after himself and he's willing to fork up a lot of cash to make it happen.
It's a story that is generating a lot of buzz on social media.
Rye has always been known as a tiny, quiet city on the water. West is making some noise, reportedly filing official papers asking Rye to permanently drop the R in its name to be called "Ye" after himself.
"Ye" is short for Kanye and the title of his 2018 album.
He reportedly offered $10 million for the Rye's name change, with the money going to pay off the city and school district's debt.
"It's a laugher!" says longtime Rye resident Gus Baglio. "I don't think the people in Rye are that worried about their student's debt."
According to the U.S. Census, Rye has a median household income of nearly $193,000. So some residents say the city isn't necessarily desperate for financial help.
"I don't think the property values need any help, they'll take care of themselves," Baglio says.
"I can't imagine a city being bought off by somebody, especially for a fairly conservative city like Rye," says resident Julie Lange.
News 12 reached out to the Rye mayor and city council in an attempt to confirm these reports but have not yet heard back.
