Chester Town Supervisor Alex Jamieson handed in his resignation ahead of sentencing Tuesday on charges he stole thousands of dollars from the state.  

Jamieson, who served as supervisor for six years, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges he wrongfully collected nearly $6,000 in unemployment checks while working for the town.

He agreed to pay back the money and step down as part of a plea deal.

His replacement, Robert Valentine, is a registered Conservative unanimously voted in by the town board Monday. He says his priorities pick up where Jamieson left off.

This includes keeping taxes down, seeing through a newly passed ward voting system and making sure construction at the 431-unit housing complex The Greens at Chester goes by the book.

For now, Jamieson's name is still up in Town Hall. The former supervisor told News 12 by phone that he's sorry to go but has left the town in good shape and in good hands with Valentine.

Chester passed its $13 million 2019 budget last night before Jamieson stepped down.
