The rail crossing at Roaring Brook Road in Chappaqua will be closed this weekend so additional safety upgrades can be installed.

Work was first done to the area around the crossing back in May. New lights, signs and pavement markings were added to improve visibility for drivers.

The work was prompted by February's deadly Metro-North train crash in Valhalla that resulted in the deaths of six people.

This weekend, state Department of Transportation crews will replace the concrete approach on the east side of the crossing as well as make changes to improve drainage. The area is prone to flooding because of the nearby juncture of Roaring Brook and Chappaqua Brook, which runs along the tracks.

The entrance and exit ramps from the Saw Mill River Parkway and Roaring Brook Road between the parkway and Southview Road will be shut down. The closure is expected to last through 7 p.m. Sunday.

While drivers can expect delays and detours, officials say train service will not be affected.

Town officials say they plan to eventually have an overpass installed at the Roaring Brook crossing, although there is no word on funding or approval from Albany.
