The New York State Thruway Authority has decided that all New Jersey commuters using the Tappan Zee Bridge will have to transfer their accounts to New York.
The decision requires New Jersey drivers to sign up for an E-ZPass account in New York if they wish to keep their Tappan Zee Bridge commuter plan discount.
Drivers can still cross into New York with a New Jersey E-ZPass, but a New York account will keep the cost at $3 per toll, compared with $4.75 without the discount.
More than 3,000 drivers from New Jersey currently use the Tappan Zee commuter discount.
A Thruway Authority spokesperson says the new rule, which is effective immediately, will improve customer service.
A New Jersey Turnpike representative says New York drivers heading into the Garden State will not see any new changes in its discount system.
