Ceremony at The Rising honors growing list of 9/11 victims
It has been 16 years since the 9/11 terror attacks, and ceremonies around the Hudson Valley marked the somber occasion Monday.
A special ceremony honored the 123 people killed from Westchester at The Rising at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
For the first time this year, first responders from Westchester who died after 9/11 were honored as well.
County Executive Rob Astorino says they know of 11 first responders from Westchester, all police and firefighters, who died after 9/11. Their names were read along with the 111 victims from Westchester and 12 former residents who died in the attacks.
Astorino was accompanied by the widow of FDNY Battalion Chief Kevin Byrnes to place a wreath on a steal beam from the World Trade Center
The Rising is the county’s official memorial to the Westchester victims of 9/11. It was officially dedicated in 2006, just five years after the attacks. The victims’ families chose the memorial’s location in the eastern corner of the plaza, as well as the design of the monument.
The 80-foot tower, which was designed by Frederic Schwartz of New York City, consists of steel beams to represent each family who lost a loved one. At the base of the monument is the Ring of Remembrance, which displays the names of each victim and an inscription chosen by the families. The Rising memorial takes its name from the Bruce Springsteen song of the same title written after the 9/11 attacks.
In addition to The Rising, the plaza is also home to the Fallen Memorial Walkway, dedicated to Westchester soldiers killed in the fight on terror. There is also a beam from the World Trade Center donated by former Gov. George Pataki.
