Local Catholic groups are calling for the excommunication of Gov. Andrew Cuomo from the church after he signed a late-term abortion bill into law.

The Reproductive Health Act strips abortion from the penal code and makes late-term abortions legal at the discretion of health care providers based on the viability of the fetus or if the woman's life or health is in jeopardy.

Michael Carey of the Jonathan Carey Foundation in New York says Cuomo is ignoring the Catholic church's teachings and leaders with the new law.

Some parishioners at Christ the King in Yonkers also called for the excommunication of Cuomo, saying that they believe abortion is a sin.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, responded to the legislation by tweeting, "For a genuine progressive, ALL human life deserves dignity, respect, care, and protection, no matter what stage, from the womb to the tomb. No exceptions!"

A spokesperson for Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office tells News 12 that Dolan released a statement saying he will not excommunicate the governor.
