Captured prison escapee could head to Sing Sing
Convicted killer and prison escapee David Sweat could soon be sent to one of the most notorious and iconic prisons in the nation: Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining.
Sweat is currently in an Albany hospital, recovering after being twice shot by a state trooper near the Canadian border on Sunday. He escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6 with fellow inmate Richard Matt, who was shot and killed last Friday.
Once Sweat is medically cleared, he will likely not be transferred to the prison from which he escaped. Reports say that he is ineligible for the Supermax prison in Colorado, which is reserved for traitors and terrorists. He could wind up in another maximum-security prison in New York State, including Sing Sing.
The Clinton County district attorney has said that Sweat will be charged with escape. Since he was already serving a life sentence, any further penalties will likely be formalities.
The New York Department of Corrections declined to comment on where Sweat will be transferred, saying that it does not release such information for security reasons.
Meanwhile, Clinton Correctional Facility is now under investigation for corruption and drug trafficking. Twelve employees, including security staff, have recently been placed on administrative leave as suspicions swirl over potential accomplices to Sweat and Matt's escape.
