Candidate for Putnam sheriff out of race
A Republican candidate for the post of Putnam County sheriff has dropped out of the race Wednesday amid allegations of campaign fraud.
Andrew DeStefano says he decided to leave the race due to a "dire family emergency," adding that he'll be out of the country to handle it.
Republican Elections Commissioner Anthony Scannapieco says the district attorney's office had requested documents regarding DeStefano, which later were turned over to state police.
Since the deadline to withdraw from the primary already passed, DeStefano's name will still appear on the ballot.
The winner in the Sept. 15 Republican primary will face off against Democrat Kevin McConnville.
