Camp counselor dies suddenly in front of kids
A 17-year-old camp counselor suddenly collapsed and died in front of horrified campers at a Yonkers park Wednesday. John Liburd, of the Bronx, was a counselor at Young People's Day Camp. He collapsed while playing basketball in Tibbets Brook Park around 2 p.m. A woman who works at a nearby concession stand says Liburd was short of breath, took a drink of water, then passed out.
Westchester County police say emergency responders initially managed to revive Liburd, but he died on the way to St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers. Liburd may have had a pre-existing condition that contributed to his death. A preliminary autopsy determined the Cardinal Hayes High School student died of congestive heart failure.
The camp's executive director says he has arranged for grief counselors to talk to campers, aged 4 to 14, and staff members.
