Bus gets stuck on train tracks; driver arrested
A school bus driver was arrested for allegedly stopping her bus on the tracks at the Roaring Brook Road crossing in Chappaqua.
Police say the driver, 53-year-old Nancy Peralta, entered the railroad crossing as the gate came down on top of the bus. She had two children on board.
A Metro-North train passed by and no one was injured, but a traffic officer saw the incident and arrested Peralta.
Lt. Daniel Canon says his department has patrols at crossings to avoid another tragedy on the tracks like the one in Valhalla earlier this year. Six people died and many more were injured when a Metro-North train hit an SUV that drove through a gate crossing and stopped on the tracks.
Since they started cracking down in the beginning of March, police have given 38 citations to drivers who ignored the crossing signals.
Peralta has been charged with a misdemeanor.
A spokesperson for the bus driver's company, Mar-Can Transportation, did not return News 12's request for comment.
