Brother of immigrant killed in Bedford speaks out
After weeks of silence, the brother of the late Rene Perez spoke about his death for the first time.
Anibal Perez and his family are still trying to understand what happened on April 28, when Rene Perez, a homeless Guatemalan immigrant who police say had a long criminal record, was killed.
"What I want for my brother is justice," says Anibal Perez.
Although Anibal Perez requested a death certificate, language barriers prevented him from understanding why his brother died. The Westchester County Medical Examiner determined it was a homicide from an abdomen injury, while Perez originally believed his brother's death was due to an alcohol poisoning.
Federal investigators are overseeing the investigation, which is being conducted by the Westchester District Attorney.
Perez's family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Bedford, Mount Kisco and a Mount Kisco police officer in connection to the death. The lawsuit claims the officer dumped his brother, Rene Perez, on a secluded road in Bedford because he was an immigrant.
