Brewster Police Department mourns loss of officer who died following shift

The department says 57-year-old sergeant Richard Gurniak collapsed after completing his shift and hanging up his keys.

The Brewster Police Department is mourning the loss of an officer who collapsed and died following his shift early Saturday morning.
The department says 57-year-old sergeant Richard Gurniak collapsed after completing his shift and hanging up his keys.
A fellow Brewster officer and two members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office tried to help him. However, he did not survive.
Gurniak served with the Brewster police for two years and was a retired member of the NYPD.
