Brawl breaks out at Yonkers barbecue
Police presence continues in Yonkers after a brawl broke out at a neighborhood barbecue Saturday.
Residents say it began with a gathering of between 50 and 75 people celebrating the Memorial Day. They say some of the kids at the barbecue were on top of vehicles on the street. Police came by and told them to get off and to go home. That?s when they say the melee erupted.
Police arrested four teenagers and several adults in the brawl.
The mothers of the four arrested teens say their children did nothing wrong. They say they had to stand by and watch while their children were attacked. One teen was taken to St. Joseph?s hospital, received 14 stitches on his head and was treated for shoulder injuries.
Yonkers police confirmed the incident, but denied any kind of police brutality. They say the group was out of control.
Officials say two police officers were injured. They also say one of the teenagers broke the windshield of the police cruiser trying to free someone in the backseat.
Residents say the police could have handled it differently. The parents say they will launch a formal complaint.
It is not known whether alcohol was involved.
