Search crews recovered the body of a missing scuba diver in Southeast Monday afternoon
Putnam County sheriff's deputies say Robert Thomas, 49, of Jersey City, went missing in the waters at the Tilly Foster Mine on Sunday. His body was found around 1 p.m. Monday.
Thomas had been to the site before. His girlfriend, who was expecting him for a party, grew concerned and called the police.
Thomas’ body was found in water 170 feet deep. Thomas never surfaced after nearly four hours underwater.
"The team was able to lower from the surface a cable and view it with the camera and attach it to the body and pull it to the surface,” said Capt. William McNamara, of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
The Tilly Foster Mine was an iron mine in the 1800s that was nearly 600 feet deep in its heyday.  The mine eventually collapsed and was flooded by a nearby reservoir.
