A standoff that ended in an explosion in Connecticut left nine police officers injured and one person dead, authorities say.
The incident happened at a home on the 300 block of Quinnipiac Avenue in North Haven, where police say a body was found on the property Thursday.
Police will not confirm the identity of the body found until after an autopsy is conducted, but they did say no one else was on the property except for a single person who had barricaded himself inside the home.
The ordeal began Wednesday afternoon when police say a woman reported a domestic violence situation with her husband. North Haven's first selectman says the woman was being held hostage by the man, but police have not confirmed that information.
Investigators immediately went to the home and say it turned into a standoff situation with the husband. While they were trying to coax out the man, explosions went off in the barn behind the home. Nine SWAT officers went to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries that included cuts, concussions and broken bones. All of them are expected to be OK. Police say the injured include five officers from East Haven, three from North Haven and one from Branford.
Court records show the home where the explosion took place is owned by John and Deborah Sayre and that Deborah Sayre filed for divorce last month. There are no protective orders on record against either of them.
Police have not commented on the condition of the wife but stress she was not home at the time.
Authorities reopened Quinnipiac Avenue late Thursday afternoon. A wrecking crew was brought in to knock down what was left of the home.
