A basketball jersey is now retired in Rockland County, but it's not from an NBA player - not even a high school phenom.
John Screene wasn't there to see his number retired - he died unexpectedly at home in Pearl River last June.
Screene graduated from Clarkstown South High School in 2020 and had just graduated from a job training program when he died.
His family says he was excited to start his next chapter. He wanted to apply for his dream job at Stew Leonard's.
His family says that he really found himself when he joined the BOCES Bombers Special Olympics basketball team.
His team played in the John Screene Memorial Basketball Game in his honor on Wednesday.
Nancy Logan, of the Special Olympics, says when it was time for new uniforms, Screene's team asked to have #14 on their uniform sleeves.
She also says the Special Olympics gave out a new award - the John Screene Spirit Award - in his memory.
