A special blood drive in Rockland County is honoring a man who was a champion for veterans.
The New York Blood Center in Pomona is collecting red blood cells and double red blood cells inside the lobby of building A on Sanitorium Road until 5 p.m.
The drive is in honor of former Veterans Service Agency Director Jerry Donellan, who passed away in March. He was also a dedicated blood donor.
Officials say with the Labor Day weekend approaching, blood is needed.
The goal is to collect 100 units that will be given to several hospitals in the Hudson Valley.
The group Donate Life Rockland also celebrated organ donors or those who donate blood with a special pop-up barbecue.
